The Island Life
Isla Mujeres is a fishing village and though it is now discovered by tourists it still retains it's charm and tranquil atmosphere. As you stroll the streets in the evening you will see families gathered together in Caribbean styled homes, tucked between stores and restaurants, mending their fishing nets and relaxing.
Finally, you'll want to visit Isla Mujeres to live the unforgettable exhuberant but secluded island experience of snorkeling, scuba diving along the coral reefs and all kinds of Sport and deep-sea fishing for all experience levels.
Welcome to Isla Mujeres, Mexico
An idyllic escape laid-back lifestyle and Island feel.
Isla Mujeres is a fish-shaped island 13km (8 miles) across the Bahia de Mujeres (Bay of Women) from Cancún, which makes it a quick boat ride away.
One of Mexico's main small Caribbean Islands, 'Isla Mujeres' is an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of large tourist destinations. Isla Mujeres is not particularly large and has that island feel -- with small roads, lots of mopeds, few if any trucks, and a sense of remoteness from the rest of the world. Yet it's just a short ferry or air-conditioned speed-boat ride from the mainland.
Isla Mujeres offers a variety of local small restaurants, ample outdoor activities and water sports, and a laid-back atmosphere that contrasts with much of the mainland experience.
Transportation to Isla Mujeres
Passenger ferries travel to Isla Mujeres from Puerto Juárez, and car ferries leave from Punta Sam, both near Cancún. More expensive passenger ferries, with fewer departures, leave from the Playa Linda pier on Cancún Island.
Isla Mujeres is only 5 miles long and half a mile wide with a downtown area of just four by six blocks. The average temperature is 80 degrees and 60% humidity. Mapped at latitude North 21° 11' 5" and longitude West 86° 42' 50" Isla's terrain is flat with beaches on all sides.
One of the most popular excursions from Cancún is a day trip to Isla Mujeres on a party boat. But if you want to do more than wander the streets, shop, or lie on the beach for a few hours, it's best to stay overnight and indulge yourself with the Island lifestyle.
Hotels range from very rustic to the laid-back luxury category like our Isla Mujeres family beach resort — Avalon Reef Club Isla Mujeres Resort & Spa — in the North part of the Island in one of the most beautiful beaches: Playa Norte (Spanish for 'North Beach').
